Who is Decks in the City?

Decks in the City is an inclusive DJ education and creative development platform based in Liverpool, working nationally. We make DJing, electronic music and performance accessible, structured and achievable.

Founded by Kerri Ankrah-Lucas, the organisation has grown from grassroots workshops into a respected training space focused on technical excellence, confidence building and creative progression.

We work with beginners, emerging artists and institutions to remove barriers to DJ culture, opening access to skills, networks and professional opportunities that are often informal or gatekept.

At our core, we believe talent is everywhere. Access is not.

Kerri Ankrah-Lucas is the Founder and Director of Decks in the City, a Liverpool-based DJ education and creative development platform expanding access to electronic music culture across the UK.

She founded the organisation to professionalise and democratise DJ and music production training, creating structured pathways that move participants from first engagement to industry-level performance.

Her leadership combines creative production expertise with strategic programme development, building sustainable talent pipelines and high-quality training environments. Kerri’s work focuses on removing systemic barriers while upholding technical excellence and progression into paid opportunities, festival bookings and further education.

Her long-term vision is to embed accredited DJ education within formal learning institutions and establish Decks in the City as a national centre for inclusive electronic music training.

I attended a Decks in the City Open Decks night at Arts Bar Baltic after being invited by a fellow DJ.

From the moment I arrived, I felt the difference. The community was welcoming, supportive and focused on helping each other grow. It was not just about playing music. It was about building confidence, sharing skills and creating space for people to progress.

I had wanted to learn to DJ for years but never knew where to start. Most of the courses I found were aimed at younger people. When I saw that Decks in the City had created Dads on Decks, a course designed for people like me, I finally felt there was a space I could step into.
