Sound Kid : Intro to DJ

1-DSC05518_edited_edited_edited_edited.jpg

Our Sound Kids programme offers DJ and music production tuition for young people aged 9–17.

Young people can join our structured, hands-on eight-week Introduction to DJ course, or choose private one-to-one tuition in DJing or music production, giving them the option to learn as part of a small group or individually at their own pace.

Starting with the basics, young DJs will learn how professional DJ equipment works, how to choose and organise music, beatmatch, mix between tracks and begin putting together their own DJ sets.

Each week builds on the last, giving them time to practise, develop their skills and grow in confidence behind the decks. Alongside the technical side of DJing, we'll introduce them to different styles of music and the culture behind DJing, encouraging them to explore what they like, develop their own taste and start finding their own sound.

By the end of the course, they will be able to:

  • Set up and navigate professional DJ equipment

  • Understand the basic structure and phrasing of music

  • Beatmatch and mix between tracks

  • Choose music and begin building their own DJ sets

  • Use EQs and basic mixing techniques

  • Perform with growing confidence

The course finishes with a supported performance for friends and family, giving our young DJs the chance to show off what they've learned and experience performing in a safe, supportive environment.

With a maximum of six young people in each group, everyone gets plenty of hands-on time with the equipment and individual support from their tutor.

No previous experience or equipment is needed. We provide everything they need to get started.

Want to try it first?

Before our first eight-week Sound Kids courses begin, we're running introductory taster sessions for young people who want to have a go at DJing and see what it's all about.

The tasters are relaxed, practical sessions where they'll get behind the decks, meet the team, try professional DJ equipment and learn some of the basics.

No experience needed. Just come along and give it a go.
